IRS Chief Admits Improper Screening Went on Until Last Month
Monday, 24
Jun 2013 03:37 PM
The Internal Revenue Service's
screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer
than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency said Monday. An
internal IRS document obtained by The Associated Press said that besides
"tea party," lists used by screeners to pick groups for close
examination also included the terms "Israel," ''Progressive" and
"Occupy." The document said an investigation into why specific terms
were included was still underway.
In a conference call with reporters, Danny Werfel said that after becoming acting IRS chief last month, he discovered wide-ranging and improper terms on the lists and said screeners were still using them. He did not specify what terms were on the lists, but said he suspended the use of all such lists immediately.
"There was a wide-ranging set of categories and cases that spanned a broad spectrum" on the lists, Werfel said. He added that his aides found those lists contained "inappropriate criteria that was in use."
Werfel's comments suggest the IRS may have been targeting groups other than tea party and other conservative organizations for tough examinations to see if they qualify. The agency has been under fire since last month for targeting those groups.
His comments also indicate that the use of inappropriate terms on such lists lasted longer than has been revealed previously. A report last month by a Treasury Department inspector general said agency officials abolished targeting of conservative groups with those lists in May 2012.
Werfel said preliminary results of an examination he has conducted of his agency have so far found no indication of improper screening beyond the IRS offices that examines groups seeking tax-exempt status.
He said he believes there was "insufficient action" by IRS managers to prevent and disclose the problem involving the screening of certain groups, but has discovered no specific clues of misconduct.
"We have not found evidence of intentional wrongdoing by anyone in the IRS or involvement in these matters by anyone outside the IRS," he told reporters.
Werfel's comments came as he released an 83-page report containing his assessments of the embattled agency and initial steps he is taking to make improvements.
The report describes several new procedures the agency is installing to prevent unfair treatment of taxpayers in the future. They include a fast-track process for groups seeking tax-exempt status that have yet to get a response from the IRS within 120 days of applying.
In addition, the top five people in the agency responsible for the tax-exempt status of organizations have been removed, including the former acting commissioner, Steven Miller, whom President Barack Obama replaced with Werfel.
"The IRS is committed to correcting its mistakes, holding individuals accountable as appropriate" and establishing new controls to reduce potential future problems, Werfel told reporters.
Werfel's comments and report drew negative reviews from one of the IRS's chief critics in Congress, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Issa said the review "fails to meaningfully answer the largest outstanding questions about inappropriate inquiries and indefensible delays. As investigations by Congress and the Justice Department are still ongoing, Mr. Werfel's assertion that he has found no evidence that anyone at IRS intentionally did anything wrong can only be called premature."
The IRS has provided congressional committees investigating the agency documents related to the screening problems. He said work was continuing on removing sensitive taxpayer information from those documents, and he said he expects them to be released soon.
Werfel had promised to produce a report within a month of taking over the embattled agency.
Werfel said he briefed Obama and Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew on the report earlier Monday.

Board of
Palin: Immigration Bill Is a Vote for Amnesty, Not Security
Monday, 24 Jun 2013 08:10 PM By Courtney Coren
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin
criticized the Senate immigration bill for lacking teeth on border security,
going after Florida Sen. Marco Rubio specifically, in a long Facebook post Monday.
Palin detailed several amendments that were presented that she argues would have increased security at the border but were all voted down.
"It's beyond disingenuous for anyone to claim that a vote for the bill is a vote for security," the former Republican vice presidential candidate wrote.
"Look no further than the fact that Senator Rubio and amnesty supporters nixed Senator Thune's amendment that required the feds to finally build part of a needed security fence before moving forward on the status of illegal immigrants who've already broken the law to be here," she said.
She then cited the amendment offered by Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky that made similar demands as Thune's amendment, which was also voted down.
"And if shooting down the border fence wasn't proof enough, they blew another chance by killing Senator Paul's 'Trust But Verify' amendment, which required the completion of a fence in five years and required Congress to vote on whether the border is actually secure before furthering any immigration measures," Palin wrote.
She also criticized the Corker-Hoeven amendment presented last Thursday that would put an additional 20,000 border patrol agents to the border with Mexico 10 years after it is enacted, after certain goals are met.
"Now the Senate's pro-amnesty crowd is offering a fig leaf to security via the Corker-Hoeven Amendment, but this is really nothing more than empty promises," she said. "It's amnesty right now and border security ... eh, well, someday."

MIAMI, 25 DE JUNIO DE 2013, NHR.com—En NHR.com hemos

Tenemos derecho a cuestionar, dudar y
¡No

Coulter warns GOP will suffer ‘devastating’ consequences if immigration reform passes
On Fox News Channel’s Saturday broadcast of “America’s
News HQ,” Ann Coulter attacked the immigration legislation and questioned why
Republicans, including junior Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, would
support such legislation after
suggesting otherwise during an election.
“[D]emocrats will get 30 million new voters, 80
percent of which, according to all polls, will be voting for the Democrats,”
Coulter said. “Why any Republican would support this — and by the way, it is
kind of striking that Republicans including Marco Rubio don’t support such
amnesties when they are running for office. Oh, no, somehow it is once they get
to Washington, they discover
all of the
unknown bounties for Republicans and amnesty. But Rubio specifically said a
pathway to citizenship is amnesty when he ran against Charlie Crist a couple of
years ago.”
Anchor Uma Pemmaraju asked Coulter, the author of “Mugged: Racial
Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama,” why Democrats were expressing a sense of urgency in
getting the bill through the Senate before the Fourth of July break.
“This is the way the Democrats always hoodwink, always
snooker the Republicans as they tried to do with gun control,” she said. “‘Oh
come on, you have to be with gun control after Newtown. We are trying to help
you out,
Republicans. Why don’t we schedule the vote for Sunday?’ And the better path
has been let’s think about this. Let’s see what is in the thousand-page bill. I
mean this is another Obamacare-type bill where people don’t know what is in it.
A real immigration bill could be one-page long — enforce E-verify and build a
fence. This idea that the fence is some impossible thing — ‘What do you mean, a
fence? We don’t understand and it will not work.’ You know, fences have worked
all over the world going back hundreds of years.”
Coulter also explained the electoral benefits
for the
Democratic Party should their efforts prove successful, but that it would also
hurt low-wage workers that Democrats seem to be neglecting in their
consideration of immigration reform.
“The Democrats don’t care about making lawbreakers —
first immediately getting them legalized and then a few years later giving them
citizenship because it helps them electorally,” Coulter said. “And don’t be
mistaken. The Democrats do not care about the people. It is generally — they
certainly don’t care about low-wage workers. And that’s who Republicans should
care about. We care about Americans, and low-wage workers are going to be
devastated by bringing in another 30 million very low-wage workers. It’s just
the laws of supply and demand. People will be poorer, especially those without
a high school
education, a
college education. They are already suffering under Obama with massive
unemployment. The last thing we need is another 30 million low-wage workers.”
“And by the way, the reason I say 30 million is, the
estimates now — and I’ll assume they are correct — say we have 11 million
immigrations here,” she continued. “Well, but we have chain migration under
[Sen.] Teddy Kennedy’s 1965 immigration act. So that 11 million can instantly
start bringing in their distant relatives, their brothers-in-law, their second
cousins — which is what happened with [former President Ronald] Reagan’s 1986
amnesty bill, which is why you get the 1986 amnesty bill. In 1988, the
Republican share
of the Hispanic
vote plummeted from 37 percent to 30 percent. A few years later, the last
Republican was elected statewide in California. This is devastating for the
Republican Party, which Republicans should care about. It is also devastating
for the country, which the entire country should care about, especially those
who care about the people who are in the bottom rungs of society.”

JUSTICIA
Ancient Egyptian Statue Mysteriously Rotates at
Museum. An ancient Egyptian statue in a British museum has sparked debate after it was captured on
video seemingly rotating on its own.
The 10-inch tall statue of Neb-senu
has been on display at the Manchester Museum in Manchester, England, for 80
years but it was only recently that museum staff noticed the statue moving.
"Most Egyptologists are not superstitious people. I wondered who had
changed the object's position without telling me," the museum's curator, Campbell
Price, told the U.K.'s Sun. "But the next time I looked, it was facing in another
direction-and a day later had yet another orientation."
With his curiosity piqued, Price returned the statue of the Egyptian
idol to its original position in a locked glass case and set up a camera to
film the statue over an 11-hour period. The resulting time-lapse video, Price
says, shows the statue moving on its own.
Other experts attribute the rotation to a more scientific reasoning,
such as subtle vibrations that cause the statue to move.
"The statue only seems to spin
during the day when people are in the museum," Carol Redmount, associate professor of Egyptian archeology at the University of California,
Berkeley, told ABC News. "It could have something to do with its
individual placement and the individual character of the statue."
The statue, made from serpentine, shows what is likely an official with
"priestly duties," according to Price, wearing a shoulder-length wig
and knee-length kilt.
The hieroglyphs on the back of the statue spell out, "bread, beer
and beef," a "prayer for offerings for the spirit of the man,"
Price told the Sun. http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/ancient-egyptian-statue-mysteriously-rotates-museum-141331675.html?vp=1
