Presidente Barack Hussein Obama

Marzo Fernandez: LAS OLIMPIADAS DE LAS ESTUPIDECES

Gitmo Inmates Rejecting Repatriation in Algeria

Friday, 29 Nov 2013 09:35 AM By Sandy Fitzgerald

The Obama administration may be pushing to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, but that doesn't mean all the prisoners want to go home.

Two Algerian prisoners being held at the Cuban naval base are fighting against being transferred out because they fear Islamist extremists will try to kill them when they discover the repatriated men don't share their views on violence, a lawyer for one of them told The Wall Street Journal.
Robert Kirsch, who represents detainee Belkacem Bensayah, said sending him and the other Algerian detainee, Djamel Ameziane, back to the North African country is "the most callous, political abuse of these men," and is being done so the Obama administration can show progress on closing the prison.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has visited both prisoners for their exit interviews this week, said Kirsch, and has asked the United States to reconsider sending them back to Algeria, a claim the Red Cross has not yet confirmed.
They would be returning to Algeria as Islamist violence is growing there and in other North African countries. According to government reports, North Africa now houses 15 al-Qaida affiliates, according to a recent Forbes report, and there have more than 1,000 attacks in Algeria, LIbya, Tunisia, and Morocco since 2010.
Cliff Sloan, the State Department's special envoy on the Guantanamo closing, refused comment on specific cases, telling the Journal that State is "moving ahead on the president's commitment to close Guantanamo responsibly, and we are making progress."
The Cuban prison, which former President George W. Bush opened in 2002, holds 164 prisoners, with 84 already cleared for release with restrictions. The government held a review last week for 21 more prisoners who are eligible to seek clearance, and nine others are either serving sentences or facing charges.
U.S. officials said they have already put off repatriation to some countries, including Tunisia, Syria, and Uzbekistan, along with Algeria, when detainees fear mistreatment upon going home.
Human rights activists say detainees' fears must be taken seriously.
"When you hear people say they would rather spend the rest of their lives in Guantanamo than go to a particular place, you have to take that seriously," said Andrea Prasow, a counterterrorism counsel with Human Rights Watch.
On Thursday, a senior Obama administration official, who was not named, said the United States does consider a detainee's concerns, but 14 detainees have already been sent back to Algeria without incident.
Bensayah, 51, is one of six Algerians who were arrested in Bosnia for plotting to blow up U.S. and British embassies, and was turned over with the others to the United States in January 2002, shortly after Bush opened the prison.

The other five have already been released, but a judge ruled Bensayah was an al-Qaida "facilitator" who planned to go to Afghanistan, but later backed away from the claims, ruling him eligible for release. Bensayah wants to return to Bosnia where his family lives, but the U.S. prefers returning prisoners to their own countries.
Amezian, 46, was caught trying to enter Pakistan from Afghanistan following the U.S. invasion that came after the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks. He has been fighting repatriation to Algeria since 2009 and wants to be resettled in Canada.

Obamacare Site Still 'Hit-and-Miss' as Fix Deadline Looms

The Obama administration has said the government’s troubled HealthCare.gov website will function smoothly by the end of Saturday.

Those paid to help enroll Americans in Obamacare remain doubtful.
From Florida to Alaska, the “navigators” designated to sign people up for insurance under the  healthcare overhaul say the online insurance exchange has improved since its Oct. 1 debut, but outages and errors continue to prevent many from using it to buy their coverage.
The site is “kind of hit and miss,” said Karen Basha Egozi of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, a U.S. designated navigator. “There have definitely been more hits lately than in the past. But I know there are cases where people still get locked out when they try to purchase a plan.”
Tyann Boling, chief operating officer of Enroll Alaska, a unit of Anchorage-based Northrim Benefits Group LLC, said she now rates the site a four out of 10, with 10 being fully functional. “It’s got a long ways to go,” she said.
HealthCare.gov, which serves 36 states including Florida and Alaska, was designed to help uninsured Americans buy new health plans by March 31, as required under the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Delays and software problems, though, have plagued the site since its rollout, giving support to the law’s harshest critics.
Weekend Fixes
Enroll Alaska has signed up 52 people in health plans out of about 2,200 who have requested help since the site opened. Boling said she is mostly successful on the site with simple cases, like a single adult making a set income. For uncommon financial situations, “the website is not able to function at the capacity yet that capture the complications of people’s lives,” she said.
On a Nov. 27 conference call with reporters, Julie Bataille, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, reiterated the administration’s pledge to have the site working smoothly for “the vast majority of users” by Dec. 1. Technicians working on the site will continue making repairs through the weekend, she said.
The government has added storage capacity to the data center and boosted processing power so it should be able to handle 800,000 visits a day and 50,000 users simultaneously, according to Bataille. Still, she said there will likely continue to be unexpected outages, periods of slowness and times when traffic is heavier than the site can handle.
Obama’s Legacy
President Barack Obama said the health-care law will “be a legacy I am extraordinarily proud of,” during an interview with ABC News’ Barbara Walters airing today on “20/20.”
“Obviously my most recent concern has been that my website’s not working,” Obama said, according to a summary of the interview by ABC News. “We’re evaluating why it is exactly that I didn’t know soon enough that [it] wasn’t going to work the way it needed to.”
Recent fixes have made it possible for most consumers to create an account and calculate how much their insurance will cost, according to insurance brokers and non-profit groups helping people enroll. The breakdown often comes at the final step of purchasing a plan, they said.
That’s caused some consumers to give up on the federal exchange with less than a month left for them to buy a plan that will put their coverage in effect on Jan. 1. Increasingly, people are bypassing the federal site and turning directly to insurers, even though that means they can’t get immediate access to U.S. subsidies, said Raymond Magnuson, owner of Magnuson & Associates, a Tucson, Arizona-based insurance broker.
‘Breaking Point’
“This week has become the breaking point,” Magnuson said by telephone. “I have several clients this week that have said exactly that: ‘I give up. I don’t care what the federal subsidy is. Enroll me in a plan. I’ll pay the premium.’”
In those instances, he said, they’re guaranteed coverage for Jan. 1, “but they’re giving up, in some cases, hundreds if not thousands of dollars in federal subsidies because of it.”
Those buying directly through an insurer website would still have to go through healthcare.gov to find out if they qualify for a subsidy, federal officials have said. If they’re applying with the insurer by telephone, they can apply for a subsidy separately through the federal site and have it applied to their plan. The payment then is sent directly to the insurer.
Seeking a Subsidy
While accessing the site may be easier as the result of recent software fixes, using it to figure out the actual cost of a plan can be problematic, said John Foley, supervising attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, a navigator group in Florida.
Some of the data provided on consumer subsidies has turned out to be incorrect in individual cases so people may be charged more or less than they thought. There’s no consistency, he said.
The Legal Aid Society has only managed to sign up 10 to 15 people out of “hundreds” who have come to the organization for help, according to Foley. Even those successes are questionable, he said, because the group hasn’t yet heard that anyone has received notices from their insurers confirming enrollment.
“It’s slow going,” Foley said.
Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director for the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, a navigator group, is telling people to log on in the evening after peak hours, recommending paper applications when people get frustrated and the call center, if necessary.
‘Buy it Month’
Healthcare.gov “is improving, literally week-over-week and day-over-day,” Hamler-Fugitt said. “October was homework month, November is window-shopping month. So we certainly hope December becomes ‘let’s buy it’ month.”
In the meantime, navigators are trying to keep consumers calm.
“The message we’re giving people is be patient, that yeah, whenever you have something big, it takes awhile,” said Sue Berkowitz, director of the South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center. “But there’s still time, and you can make this happen.”

The Collapse of Journalistic Standards in JFK Coverage
NOVEMBER 29, 2013 BY CLIFF KINCAID

Any hope that the media will practice civility and raise journalistic standards has been dashed by the sympathetic coverage given to a new book falsely charging an American president with mass murder and political assassinations.
"" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; display: block; border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;"
The book, The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ, is based in part on the work of a communist operative, Joachim Joesten, who was assigned by the Soviet KGB to divert attention from the communist connections of JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.
But author Roger Stone maintains, in the face of the evidence, “I don’t think the Russian state was involved in any way” in the JFK murder.
A former conservative turned libertarian, Stone has been recognized over the years for his role as a “political trickster” and has lately been promoting legalized marijuana, prostitution, and homosexual marriage. He even appeared topless in a gay rights parade. His bio claims he “first tipped off the FBI to Governor Eliot Spitzer’s use of prostitutes.”
“I was born and raised a Roman Catholic,” he said in one interview. “I believe in God, but I think basically organized religion is a hoax.”
Stone has no journalistic credentials to speak of. His bio proclaims, “Aside from politics, he’s also known for his personal style, and writes the annual ‘Ten Best and Worst Dressed Men and Women in the World’ column for the Huffington Post while serving as Men’s Fashion Editor for the Daily Caller.”
"" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; display: block; border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;"
The book is written with Mike Colapietro, described on the book flap as an “investigative journalist”—who is, in fact, a former sports writer and contributor to SMOKE magazine, devoted to cigars.
Nevertheless, the book has been taken seriously by such outlets as the Sean Hannity show on the Fox News Channel, the New York Post, The Huffington Post, The New York Daily News, Esquire (online), The Daily Caller, The National Enquirer, The Globe (the tabloid), The New York Observer, The Daily Beast, Newsmax, USA Today, Glenn Beck’s The Blaze, and Politico.
Stone’s book “stands on the research of citizens who have doubted the government’s version of events as depicted by the Warren Commission,” his preface says. One of these “citizens” is identified as an East German Communist by the name of Joachim Joesten, the author of the 1968 book The Dark Side of Lyndon Johnson. Joesten’s other books on the Kennedy assassination include Oswald: Assassin or Fall Guy?, published by a KGB front company, Marzani & Munsell.
In an email exchange, Stone acknowledged that he cited and read Joesten’s book. “I read his books,” he told me. “They are among the earliest works on the role of LBJ.”
Another one of Stone’s sources, cited in the preface, is Thom Hartmann, the “progressive” media personality featured on the Moscow-funded Russia Today television channel.
Joesten’s book, The Dark Side of Lyndon Johnson, finds Johnson guilty of murder and says, “If Lyndon Johnson has any brains left, he’d blow them out before the law gets around to him. That way he could at least escape the pinnacle of infamy and save his country from foundering in an abyss of national shame.”
Despite such sources, Stone’s JFK book has received sympathetic coverage from outlets on the left and right, including Sean Hannity, who allowed Stone to accuse LBJ of killing Kennedy and eight other people—“murders to cover up corruption, murder to cover up vote theft and electoral fraud.” No proof is offered for any of this.
Significantly, Stone has appeared on Russian media outlets such as the Voice of Russia and RT (Russia Today) television, where he has assured the Kremlin that he holds the Soviet state blameless in JFK’s murder.
As Soviet-bloc defector Ion Mihai Pacepa has written, the purpose of the KGB commissioning Joesten to write his book was to divert attention away from Oswald’s connections to the Soviet Union and Cuba. Variations of this theme have brought in LBJ, the CIA, Texas oil men, or various “right-wingers” as potential culprits in the JFK assassination.
Stone’s book is published by Skyhorse Publishing, which capitalized on the 50th anniversary of JFK’s murder by also releasing Jesse Ventura’s book, They Killed Our President: 63 Reasons to Believe There Was a Conspiracy to Assassinate JFK.
Other books published by Skyhorse include Stories of Lesbian Love and Erotica and Fifty Shades of Ecstasy.
A former aide to various Republican politicians, Stone claims Richard Nixon made “veiled references to Johnson’s complicity in the Kennedy assassination.” In fact, secretly recorded White House conversations involving then-President Nixon were released showing Nixon blaming Kennedy’s murder on the communists. Nixon said, “They pinned the assassination of Kennedy on the right wing, the Birchers. It was done by a communist and it was the greatest hoax that has ever been perpetuated.”
The “hoax” he is referring to is the elaborate KGB disinformation campaign to conceal the truth.
As noted by Professor Paul Kengor, Ronald Reagan also blamed the communists. Speaking in 1968, Reagan gave a speech saying, “Five years ago, a president was murdered by one who renounced his American citizenship to embrace the godless philosophy of communism, and it was communist violence he brought to our land. The shattering sound of his shots were still ringing in our ears when a policy decision was made to play down his communist attachment lest we provoke the Soviet Union.”
Johnson understood this as well. He told journalist Howard K. Smith, “Kennedy was trying to get to Castro, but Castro got to him first.” It was a reference to American plots to overthrow or assassinate the Cuban dictator and Castro’s promise to retaliate. A Cuban communist defector said Castro knew in advance about the communist plot to kill Kennedy.
But Johnson’s fear of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union led him and the Warren Commission to play down Oswald’s international connections to the Soviet Union and Cuba.

Hillary Clinton Supporters Slowly Realizing She Didn’t Do Anything as Secretary of State 29 November 2013 /

But that’s okay since Hillary Clinton also didn’t do anything in the Senate. It could actually be a good slogan for her campaign. “Vote for Hillary:She Won’t Do Anything as President Either.”
But some people close to Mrs. Clinton worry that, because of the high profile given to her work for women’s rights, and the headlines now being generated by the hyperkinetic Mr. Kerry, her efforts on trickier diplomatic situations have been eclipsed.
What exactly did Hillary Clinton do for women’s rights? I mean besides give speeches about it.
What about her 13 trips to Libya in 2011 to build the coalition that led to the ouster of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, they ask. Why is no one talking about how she brokered a cease-fire in Gaza? Anyone remember that she furthered economic sanctions on North Korea?
Seriously?
Libya is on fire. Its cities are run by armed Islamist militias. Some of whom murdered 4 Americans in a diplomatic mission that Hillary and her staffers failed to provide security for while they were blowing millions on overpriced Kindles, art in embassies and a YouTube channel for Afghanistan.
Does anyone in her right mind want to give Hillary credit for Libya?
Negotiated a ceasefire in Gaza? You mean the one that consists of Hamas attacking Israel and Israel fighting back?
North Korea? The brutal Communist tyranny that keeps expanding its nuclear power base despite the useless sanctions?

CNN Poll: More Americans Pessimistic About State of Nation By Sandy Fitzgerald

Americans are becoming even more pessimistic about the state of the nation, according to a new CNN/ORC International poll released Friday, with more than half saying conditions are going badly.
The survey, conducted on Nov. 18-20 of 843 adults, showed that 41 percent believe conditions are going well, marking the lowest that number has been in a CNN poll since February 2012.
Meanwhile, 59 percent say things are going badly, a number up nine points since the last poll in April. The opinions were along a partisan divide, as well as a difference of opinion between younger and older people.
"There's a slight generational divide, with 46 percent of those under age 50 saying things are going well. That number drops to 36 percent for those 50 and older," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
Americans are also pessimistic about the economy, the poll showed. Thirty-nine percent believe the economy is still declining, and just 24 percent believed a recovery is occurring. Meanwhile, 36 percent said they do not believe there is a recovery going on, but still think conditions are becoming stable.
The numbers were similar to those from a CNN/ORC International survey in October, when 59 percent predicted poor economic conditions a year from now, while 40 percent said the economy would be in good shape next year, marking the lowest level of optimism from the public in two years.
Partisan and geographic divides also came into play when it came to the economy. Forty-five percent of people who are 50 or older say the economy remains in a downturn, but 34 percent of people younger than 50 said the economy is declining. Related stories:

Urgent: Should Obamacare Be Repealed? Vote Here Now!

The world needs a strong America as much as ever By Brian Cattell on November 27, 2013

Obama’s foreign policy weakness should spark a debate among U.S. conservatives
In the days since news of a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme broke, I’ve lost count of the number of commentators – of both the right and the left – lining up to denounce President Obama as the new Neville Chamberlain.
“Worse than Munich”, screamed the headline of one column published in the Wall Street Journal.
One prominent conservative radio host even asserted that Chamberlain was a left wing Labour party member who was sacked by his own party for being too left wing at Munich (talk about moulding the facts to your argument: Chamberlain was of course a Conservative).
As far as the Iranian agreement is concerned, it is true that any sensible person should have deep misgivings about it: the Western powers appear to have spectacularly underplayed a strong hand, and the deal runs the grave risk of allowing Iran to edge towards its malevolent nuclear ambitions by stealth.
However, rather than resembling the great appeaser Chamberlain, the worry is that Obama is starting to look more like Woodrow Wilson, the “great progressive” President whose hopeless idealism on the world stage preceded America’s virtual withdrawal from global affairs and the nightmare of the 1930s.
Like Wilson, Obama is a well-meaning and idealistic liberal. But he is up against countries and individuals who recognise only cold, hard Realpolitik – and see his idealism simply as an opportunity to be exploited.
Unfortunately, therefore, at a time when challenges on the international stage are proliferating, the administration continues to project a profound sense of American weakness, one that is almost unprecedented in modern times. So, of course, that will only embolden those people who seek to challenge Western hegemony – and those that do are not generally proponents of democracy, free markets and individual rights.
The potential threats to Western interests and the balance of power are manifold, and the stakes could not be higher.
Beyond the Middle East, they include the escalating tensions in the East China Sea and China’s throwing down the gauntlet with provocative new air defence rules; the fate of Ukraine – whose people want to strike out on a new Western-oriented path – but whose supine politicians have been strong-armed back into line by a ruthless Vladimir Putin; as well as the woefully underreported but rapidly deteriorating situation in a number of African countries where Western commercial interests (not to mention democratic ideals) must make do with scant political support.
All of this is as much a challenge for American conservatives, as it is for the current liberal incumbents.
History shows that Wilson’s decline was followed by a sweeping victory for Republican isolationism, which ultimately helped create the conditions in which the enemies of a Western way of life could prosper and wreak havoc.
It is one thing therefore for conservatives to criticise the Obama administration’s many fumbles on the international stage. But they must also show what kind of foreign policy they would put in its place.
Nobody would advocate a return to the discredited neo-conservative doctrine of the Bush era but isolationism, which appeals to a growing part of the conservative movement in the US, is also not the answer. Of course, America cannot micro-manage every conflict in the world, and it certainly cannot fight every war.
But a United States that is enfeebled and withdrawn from international affairs would be a disaster, first of all for the many parts of the world that still look towards it, but then, in due course for Americans themselves.
That should never happen again.

amenper: ThanksOmamacare Day
" ¿No has oído está mejorando mucho?

HE IS OUR MAN, HE IS OUR MAN…YES OOOBAAMA…. YES HE CAN….

amenper: First Happy Thanksgiving
Washington’s Proclamation 1789

hereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”
Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His Providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which he has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Mike Rogers, Cruz: Obama Deal Ignores Iran's Missile Pact With NKorea
By Melanie Batley

Congressional Republicans are escalating their criticism of the Obama administration and its Iranian nuclear deal as news broke that the country has been covertly collaborating with North Korea on a new rocket booster for long-range missiles.
"While the president was undertaking his secret negotiations — which Congress wasn't informed of — he had to know Iran and North Korea were testing new engines for ballistic missiles to target the United States," said Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee on strategic forces, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
"Every day the president's deal looks worse and worse," he said.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is equally critical, saying the agreement with Iran neglected to address the threat of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
"The Iranian regime is clearly demonstrating through word and deed that they have no intention of moderating the behavior that earned them one of the harshest international programs of economic sanctions on record," Cruz told the Beacon.
"Relaxing the sanctions now only encourages them to continue their pursuit of nuclear weapons — and the means to deliver them to Israel, Europe and even the United States.
"I hope President Obama and Secretary [of State John] Kerry will reconsider this dangerous policy and add the immediate cessation of their ICBM program to the list of prerequisites placed on Iran before any additional negotiations take place," Cruz said.
A report Tuesday revealed that Iran has been secretly working with North Korea on a new 80-ton rocket booster than can be used in both countries' long-range missile programs, according to the Beacon, citing officials familiar with intelligence reports.
Several groups of Iranian technicians traveled to Pyongyang over the last few months, including as recently as late October, to develop the booster which officials say could be used on both a space launcher and a long-range missile.
U.S. intelligence agencies believe the countries are using their space programs to hide long-range strategic missiles which could be used to launch nuclear warheads capable of reaching the U.S. within the next two years.

'2016': OBAMA PLANS TO 'TAKE AMERICA DOWN'
Startling predictions now coming true at breakneck speed

In the 2012 highest-grossing documentary, “2016: Obama’s America,” political commentator Dinesh D’Souza made some startling predictions about the second term of Barack Obama – and now he has released a fresh, eight-minute addition to the film revealing how the president plans to “take America down a notch.”
D’Souza explains, “One of the predictions is that Obama would spend money promiscuously to raise the debt in virtual indifference to the impact of the debt on American citizens. In fact, Obama has been racking up the debt at the rate of $1 trillion a year. The debt has doubled in Obama’s term in office.”
Obama’s plot to “drag the economy down” and redistribute American wealth to the rest of the world – and financially cripple the nation – he explains, “is a transfer of hundreds of billions, in fact trillions of dollars, out of the United States and into other countries.”
Watch the new addition to the film:
In his addition to the film, D’Souza also explains exactly why and how “Obama wants to shrink the influence of American foreign policy” by “undermining our allies and … allowing our adversaries to remain in power.”
In an email announcing the film update, D’Souza wrote, “[T]here are those within our country that seek to undermine [America's] exceptionalism and ‘take us down a notch.’ What’s worse is that one of those people happens to be the president of the United States.
“When I directed ’2016: Obama’s America’ over a year ago, I prayed that I would be wrong. The damage that I predicted Obama would do to our country could never be worth an ‘I told you so.’
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t wrong. Wielding a weaponized national debt and a disdain for our standing in the world, President Obama draws us nearer and nearer to the dystopia that I warned against in 2016.”

EMO" Queridos amigos:

amenper: In this eve of Thanksgiving it is the time to reflect about what this celebration really means, and the roots of this nation.
This is a day to “render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings."
This article in today´s Wall Street Journal by Myron Magnet, does give us  the perspective of the long treasured right to worship that was the foundation of this country.

Giving Thanks in the Land of the Free
Americans have long treasured their right to worship as they choose.

In the fall of 1621, some 50 of the Puritans who had left the Old World in search of religious freedom sat down in their tiny thatched hamlet of Plymouth with their Wampanoag neighbors to feast on turkey, venison, corn and cod. They also gave thanks for surviving their first terrible New England winter, whose cold and privation had carried off half their community.
Continual waves of pilgrims fleeing religious persecution would follow them across the sea. Their sense of providential escape from foreign oppression stayed vividly alive in the American memory, and ultimately helped guide the Founding Fathers to make a revolution and fashion a new kind of government.
Hard as it is to believe at this distance of time, British law once jailed non-Anglican Protestants like the Pilgrims for worshiping as they chose. The law also barred them from the universities and public office. Thousands of Congregationalists, Baptists, Quakers and others left their native land, bringing to the New World their Dissenting tradition of self-government, individualism and personal responsibility. They had long run their own congregations, hired and fired their own ministers, read the Bible and freely judged its meaning for themselves. They believed that each individual has a direct relation to God independent of, and higher than, any worldly authority.
As late as the 1750s, Constitution-signer William Livingston was still reminding readers of his influential magazine, The Independent Reflector, how "the countless Sufferings of your pious Predecessors for Liberty of Conscience, and the Right of private Judgment" drove them "to this country, then a dreary Waste and barren Desert."
Decades later, Chief Justice John Jay wrote a gripping account of how his grandfather, a French Protestant, had returned home from a trading voyage abroad in 1685 to find his family and neighbors gone, their church destroyed. While he had been away, Louis XIV of France revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had extended religious toleration and civil rights to Protestants for almost a century. Jay's grandfather was lucky to be able to sneak aboard one of his ships and, like many others, sail away to freedom in the New World.
With this long history, Americans have had an almost physical thirst for liberty, as people do who truly know its opposite, like Eastern Europeans who once lived under communist tyranny. Long before Emma Lazarus wrote her Statue of Liberty verses about the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, George Washington noted that for "the poor, the needy, & the oppressed of the Earth," America was already "the second Land of promise"—the Promised Land. It offered, said James Madison, "an Asylum to the persecuted and oppressed of every Nation and Religion."
That thirst for liberty led the Founders to revolt when they thought that George III was squeezing upon them the tyranny that had crushed their forebears. It also led them to hedge their new government with every safeguard to keep them free.
To protect life, liberty and property from what they called the depravity of human nature—from man's innate capacity for inhumanity to others—the Founders knew they needed some kind of government armed with power. But since the officials who wield such power have the same fallen human nature as everyone else, who can be sure that they won't use it to oppress others? Who can guarantee that imperfect men wouldn't turn even the democratic republic the Founders were creating into what Continental Congressman Richard Henry Lee called an elective despotism?
The Constitution they wrote in the summer of 1787 explicitly limited government's powers to what they deemed absolutely essential. They divided and subdivided power, and they made each branch of government a watchdog over the others. But they also recognized that constitutions are only what they called "parchment barriers," easily breached if demagogues subvert the "spirit and letter" of the document.
In the first State of the Union address, George Washington stressed that the ultimate safeguard against such a danger is a special kind of culture, one that nurtures self-reliance and a love of liberty. "The security of a free Constitution," he said, depends on "teaching the people themselves to know and to value their own rights; to discern and provide against invasions of them."
If citizens start to take liberty for granted, he said, the spirit that gives life to the Constitution will flicker out, for "no mound of parchm[en]t can be so formed as to stand against the sweeping torrent of boundless ambition on the one side, aided by the sapping current of corrupted morals on the other."
It's that culture of liberty we nourish by recalling that our forebears came to these shores in search of freedom—and by giving thanks that they found it.

Consumer Confidence Falls in November
Published November 26, 2013 Reuters

U.S. consumer confidence fell in November as Americans worried about their future jobs and earnings prospects, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.
The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes fell to 70.4 from a upwardly revised 72.4 the month before. Economists had expected a reading of 72.9, according to a Reuters poll.
October was originally reported as 71.2.
"Sentiment regarding current conditions was mixed, with consumers saying the job market had strengthened, while economic conditions had slowed," Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board, said in a statement.
"However, these sentiments did not carry over into the short-term outlook."
The expectations index fell to 69.3 from 72.2, while the present situation index fell to 72.0, from 72.6.
Consumers' labor market assessment was little changed. The "jobs hard to get" index ticked lower to 34.0 from 34.9 the month before, while the "jobs plentiful" index ticked up to 11.8 percent from 11.6 percent.

Amenper: The FDA and Thee. Regulators move to control 23andMe's new genetic tests. Nov. 25, 2013 7:01 p.m. ET

This editorial in today's Wall Street journal exposes some things that the general public cannot see.
Increases in the prices of health care, are usually caused by the cost we have to pay for investigations that have improved our standard of living, increasing the duration, not only of our life of but the quality with which we live it.
But these costs are increased due to the numerous bureaucratic government regulations to implement the processes of permissions in a capricious and authoritarian manner.
This article is an accurate description of the situation.

The good news is that modern medicine advances at a much faster pace than government, but the bad news is that the regulators eventually catch up. Right on cue, the Food and Drug Administration is now bidding to take over the emerging field of personal genetics.
In a warning letter on Monday, the FDA ordered 23andMe to "immediately discontinue marketing" its genetic tests. Consumers have been mailing in a saliva sample and $99, and the six-year-old Silicon Valley start-up analyzes their genome to reveal information about their predisposition for some 250 diseases, as well as inherited traits and ancestry.
23andMe—named after the number of chromosome pairs in human DNA—does not make diagnoses. The company helps patients and curiosity-seekers to understand their own biology. Patients can also offer their code for research projects—nine of 10 do—to contribute to discoveries about the relationships between genetics and health that could transform traditional medicine. 23andMe has already assembled the world's largest DNA registry for Parkinson's disease.
The FDA can't abide such unsupervised innovation. The agency is declaring 23andMe's service an "adulterated" product under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938, in one more case of 20th-century law undermining medical progress in the 21st.
The FDA lacks any specific statutory authority to regulate genomic sequencing technologies. President Obama knows this, because as a Senator in 2006 and 2007 he introduced bills that would regulate the genomics industry. They never passed. Yet in 2010 the FDA simply decreed by fiat that these tests are considered new medical devices that require premarket testing and approval.
23andMe has been working with the FDA on approval for years, and the agency's letter scolds the company for offering new tests and services before it has received permission for the older versions. Imagine an iPhone app that needed federal approval for every update. But behavior that would be considered visionary in Mountain View is the quickest way to offend the FDA establishment.
The FDA claims that 23andMe merely has to prove that its tests are safe and effective. But what does that even mean given that FDA's main concern seems to be what patients will do with the information the company provides?
The not-so-benevolent paternalists at the FDA write that "serious concerns are raised if test results are not adequately understood by patients," and 23andMe's direct-to-consumer model may inspire people to "self-manage" their care. For example, a false positive for the BRCA1 genetic marker that increases the risk for breast cancer "could lead a patient to undergo prophylactic surgery, chemoprevention, intensive screening, or other morbidity-inducing actions."
Or maybe it would lead a woman to talk to her physician about the options and, er, double check the results before undergoing a life-altering operation.
23andMe told us in a statement that, "Our relationship with the FDA is extremely important to us and we are committed to fully engaging with them to address their concerns." That's what companies hostage to the bureaucracy always say, but it might do better to mount a legal counterstrike.
The agency's 2010 regulatory move was extralegal, and the Supreme Court and appellate circuits have begun to rein in the FDA for abridging freedom of speech. The judiciary has held in recent years that regulations on off-label drug use, cigarette labeling and other topics violate the First Amendment, and that people have a right to know basic information about their own bodies and to use it to make decisions about their own lives.
23andMe might also want to start scouting locations for a new overseas headquarters, if only to send a message about how Mr. Obama's regulators are chilling innovation and investment. You can mail a tube of saliva anywhere. The scientists and entrepreneurs helping to lead medicine into the genomic era have little need to operate inside the U.S. if that means begging the government for a hall pass every time they want to do something new and potentially life-saving.

80 Million Will Lose Employer-Provided Health Insurance. This Means You.
Written by Gary North on November 27, 2013

So, you think you will not receive a policy-cancellation letter, because your employer provides your coverage.
The odds say you will get that letter next year. New estimates of the number of employer-supplied policies that will be canceled indicate that 80 million will lose their coverage.
Go fish!
Will that get the attention of voters? You bet it will!
The law is on the books. It cannot be changed until 2017. Obama will veto any repeal bill.
The Senate has 15 Democrats up for re-election in 2014. So, there is a whole year for the cancellation letters to go out.
Then there is 2016.
Think of these letters as political junk mail. The Democrats passed the junk. The insurance companies will send the mail.
If these estimates prove accurate, then this will create a political re-structuring on a massive scale. Voters care about their fiscal bottom lines. When families find out that they will face healthcare insurance premium increases of several thousand dollars a year, they will send the Democrats a policy-cancellation letter.
The pain will not go away. Families will have to pay the premiums for different, far more expensive policies.
Politicians who vote for stupid laws figure that most voters will forget. Not this time.
Who in the Senate will introduce this one-sentence bill? “The Affordable Care Act is hereby repealed.” The man who plans to run for President in 2016.
The last major shift in political power in the United States was in November 1932. It could happen again. The House is gerrymandered. The Senate isn’t.
